Surviving Summer

From Judy Hedding, your Guide to Phoenix
I am not a fair weather fan. I cheer for the Suns, the Cardinals, the Diamondbacks, the Coyotes and the Mercury, even though they haven't had many post-season appearances recently. Thank goodness for the Arizona Rattlers, going to their third consecutive ArenaBowl championship game next Saturday in Orlando. It's another Phoenix vs Philadelphia rivalry. Did you know that Philadelphia is the 5th largest city in the U.S. and Phoenix is the 6th?

July Restaurant Inspection Reports
Mixing food on top of a trash can? Dirty scissors found inside a container of cooked fish? And let's not leave out, "Raw shell eggs, raw crab, squid salad, sushi rolls, lobster meat, raw tuna, crab salad, pork potstickers, cream cheese, seared tuna, raw salmon, raw octopus, raw yellowtail, jalapenos stuffed with crab salad, raw chicken, tofu, cucumber bowls with crab meat" found in a refrigerator with a temperature of 49 degrees (F). Yikes! With 12 serious violations, I doubt I would ever visit our worst offender for July unless there was a total change in ownership and management.

  • They Flit, They Fly
They are pretty amazing little creatures. At Butterfly Wonderland you'll learn how they come into this world and then you'll walk among them. This attraction has only been open for a few months, but it is getting a lot of attention! It's located in Scottsdale, and is the first phase of a mega entertainment development being built there over the next few years. Read my tips before you go. You can also check out some other photos I took during my visit.

    They Have Something to Say

    Get Out and Do Something
  • Every year at this time: Dbacks, Birds & Beer, ArtWalk. See more annual festivals, activities and events in August.
  • Free: grow veggies, get artsy, see a unique film, hear the bands, attend a free concert, make animal prints, see Tinkerbell, take a hike and enjoy puppetry. Get the details.
  • These will cost you something: stand up comedy, a film about Goldwater, cook a fish, more comedians, Cinderella, even more comedians and a luncheon with musical pizza. Get the details.
