Surviving Summer

From Judy Hedding, your Guide to Phoenix
One of my favorite headlines this summer was "Runner Unaware of Pregnancy Gives Birth." Not only didn't she know that she was with child when the six-pound baby came forth, but the surprise was compounded by the fact that her husband had had a vasectomy! In keeping with this theme, my words of wisdom for this week are that as you train and prepare for all the local fall walks, runs and triathlons, don't be surprised if you win a prize.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
You can participate in those walks and runs and, at the same time, do some good. 'Tis the season for Breast Cancer Awareness events, several of which involve physical activity. It's good for you! There are many other ways, at all price levels, in which you can support breast cancer victims, survivors and ongoing research, and you can enjoy yourself doing it. No longer just in October, it has already started. Check out the pink opportunities.

We Are Becoming Normal
While the sale of homes during the summer here is always slow, the trend we are seeing is that the real estate market is slowly stabilizing. The number of investors buying homes is down, owner-occupied sales are up, people are getting financing again, luxury home sales are improving, and the supply of homes for sale is rising. Foreclosures continue to decline. The next threshold for market improvement will be seen when builders start building new homes again. See what home prices were in June 2013 compared to June 2012 in various cities/towns in the Valley.

October at the Madhouse on McDowell
Get out your calendar, and call a meeting. The concert lineup for the Arizona State Fair in October is out and tickets are on sale. Of course, one of the best things about the Arizona State Fair is that all the concerts are free with your paid admission. If you don't want to stand in line, or you want to be assured that you have that seat right near the stage, the prices for reserved seats are very reasonable. Here is the concert schedule, and info on buying tickets for reserved seats. Note: If you have been in the area for a while, you'll remember that the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Fairgrounds used to be called the Madhouse of McDowell when the Phoenix Suns played there (1968-1992).
