Surviving Summer

From Judy Hedding, your Guide to Phoenix
We have had some exciting monsoon thunderstorms lately, some of which involved raging waters and property damage. Did you know that Arizona has a Stupid Motorist Law? It's all about driving into flooded areas that you should have known were not safe. See that area that used to be a road but now looks like a lake? Don't drive there. (Stupid.)

Back to School Already?
Some Valley children are back in school already, and others are enjoying their last days of freedom. It's time to pay attention to those school zones and keep to the posted speed limit.

  • Rising Out of the Desert
It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere. In south Phoenix, on Gila River Indian Community land, there was a small casino. Now, it's a beautiful casino, hotel and showroom. When you drive up, you can compare the old to the new! And for those on the west and southwest side of town, you've got a new concert venue and upscale steakhouse. Yay!

  • Get Out and Do Something
  • Every year in July, annual festivals, activities and events.
  • Free: see a silly movie, visit Ronald, hear a saguaro talk, check in at the hotel, watch a creature feature, see an accordionist extraordinaire, make something for school, listen to country and make a steampunk thing. Get the details.
  • These will cost you something: Native American music, make chiles rellenos, create a hanging garden, wrestling and a health conference. Get the details.
