Surviving Summer

From Judy Hedding, your Guide to Phoenix
Three months of summer down, two months to go. August is the toughest month of the year for me. I'm tired of sweating (the people who sit next to me at various events agree) and it's the least interesting month of the year here. The vegetable garden is dead. It's too hot to play golf. August days seem to advance in slow motion. Gee, I am depressing. Maybe it's because I'm hot. Moral: try not to write a newsletter introduction when you're cranky.

Time for Football
It never feels like football season in Phoenix in July or August, but no matter what the thermometer indicates, here we are! Arizona Cardinals training camp has begun, and you can attend the practice sessions right here in the Valley of the Sun. No more driving to Flagstaff for local Cardinals fans. How much does it cost to get in? Nothing. It's free. Here is what you need to know. And, speaking of what you need to know, you should also be aware that there is a new policy regarding what you can bring into University of Phoenix Stadium. Read about the big changes to attending an NFL event. The new rules are in effect now!

They Had Something To Say

  • Get Out and Do Something
  • Every year at this time: First Friday, rookie league baseball, evening concerts, soccer and more. See more annual festivals, activities and events in August.
  • Free: see trains, dance to Disney, watch a movie, make a green craft, listen to poetry, have grown-up time, hear the blues, see the stars, save a life and connect with military women. Get the details.
  • These will cost you something: learning archery, living longer, music for cause, pet CPR, magic of Manilow, country bands and night golf. Get the details.
